01 Overview

The real-time backbone of a ride-hailing app: every driver location, ride request and status change flows through this service.

02 Problem

The ride-hailing mobile app used Firebase for real-time updates, which cost about $300/month and was not efficient.

03 What I built

  • A Go WebSocket server running on two instances behind a load balancer.
  • Redis for shared state and pub/sub so both instances see the same rides and drivers.
  • Driver assignment, live location updates and the full ride lifecycle: request → assign → pickup → trip → complete.

04 Result

About 10x more efficient, and the $300/month Firebase cost was removed completely.
